Paper maps are essential for Ed Fairburn, who uses them as the canvas for his unique and exremely creative portraits. His thoughtful integration of human portrait and ancien topography make it appear as though the two have always belonged together.

Born 15th November 1989 in Southampton and graduated from Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2012, Ed Fairburn manipulates paper maps to construct other forms, usually portraiture. He calls this process topopointillism; a direct combination of topography and pointillism. Using traditional materials such as ink, paint and pencil, he makes gradual changes to the contours, roads and other patterns found in cartography. These changes allow him to tease out the human form, resulting in a comfortable coexistence of figure and landscape.

He aims to preserve the functionality of each map by feeding the composition instead of fighting it. He often spends hours studying the terrain before he begins any physical processes. He is interested in the degree of subtlety behind each synchronisation, and the way in which a completed map behaves more like a portrait when viewed from further away. It’s almost paradoxical that a portrait should lose detail when examined closely.

Since his first commission in 2012 (a series of portraits for the National Library of Scotland), he completed numerous bespoke works for various clients, both private and public – everything from helping couples celebrate anniversaries and birthdays, to creating book covers, illustrating wall space for retail environments – even developing creative recruitment ads for UK Intelligence Services. His clients include, BMW, British Airways, Nike, Intesa, New Republic, Fenwick, National Library of Scotland, Imperial College London, British Hearth Foundation (…) among others.
