ABOUT ANN CARRINGTON

Ann Carrington sculpts fantastical metal sculptures that evoke the age of aristocracy. She gathers found and discarded objects -including loaded items like knives and barbed wire- to shape her pieces, which often take the form of bouquets, vases, and busts. Among her best known commissions is a 2012 banner for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, which she painstakingly constructed out of half a million gold buttons. Carrington also has an official license to produce replicas of royal stamps of the Queen that she similarly constructs with buttons. Interested in the cultural associations of objects, Carrington manipulates mundane objects into marvels, inviting viewers to reconsider ephemera they might otherwise overlook.

She studied at The Royal College of Art (MA Sculpture), graduating in 1987, Trent Polytechnic (BA Fine Art), 1985, and Bourneville College of Art (Foundation), 1981. In 2010 Ann was invited by the United Nations to help raise awareness of current issues through her artwork –her first art work for The UN was presented at the UN Human Trafficking conference in Luxor Egypt, December 2010.
