ABOUT ANTI WASTE DESIGN:

“Anti” is a waste transformation and upcycling business. The company creates beautiful and sustainable products from waste, that would otherwise end up in landfill.

For example; 1 billion umbrellas are broken, lost, discarded each year worldwide. Umbrellas are not designed to last with an average lifespan of 6 months. The metal, if you assume a mass of 240 grams per umbrella, would total 240,000 tons of metal waste per year. That’s the equivalent amount of metal to build 24 Eiffel Towers each year.

In addition to that, umbrellas are made from plastics, metals and nylon. They are difficult to dissemble into their constituent materials and therefore rarely recycled. Furthermore, the nylon canopies may take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. Its too much for an object which is not designed to last more than 6 months.

Anti takes discarded, lost and broken umbrellas and transforms them into desirable products. The designs are made from a mixture of materials, some up-cycled (umbrellas), recycled and biodegradable with only 5% of the product material coming from virgin materials. Anti’s designs are built to last years (instead of 6 months as originally intended for the umbrella design).

Anti’s designs are handmade in the UK from perceived waste and recycled material. The folding umbrella ribs have been repurposed as an extendable arm for beautiful desk lamps. Each lamp is unique.
