ABOUT KYOTO DREAM TRIPS:

Kyoto and Nara Dream Trips, is the website where it is possible to see the traditional and ancient parts of Kyoto and Nara, that not many travel guides offer. This is a community to share your experiences in Japan and to learn more about this often elusive culture. Here you can find information on popular tourist sites of Nara and Kyoto and also the not-so-popular sites which are often equally rewarding. You can also find information posted on the wall about famous Japanese peoples’ birthdays, important historical events, and different odd & widely unknown traditions.

ABOUT THE PHOTO:

Tomoe Gozen (1157-1247) was a late 12th century female samurai warrior, known for her bravery and strength. She is believed to have fought in and survived the Genpei War. She was also the concubine of Minamoto no Yoshinaka. According to one historical account, Tomoe was beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming eyes. She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swordswoman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, mounted or on foot. She handled unbroken horses with superb skill; she rode unscathed down perilous descents. Whenever a battle was imminent, Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armour, an oversized sword and a mighty bow; and she performed more deeds of valour than any of his other warriors (The Tale of the Heike).

Hugo Kempeneer is the photographer, time-lapser, organiser for photo shoots; as well as the founder of KyotoDreamTrips.com which receives today The Web Award as “The Blog Of The Day” with our warmest congratulations.

Hugo was born in Antwerp, Belgium, and enjoyed his teenage years during the peak of the “Flower Power Hippie” generation. He hitchhiked through Europe, living on a beach south of Agadir, Morocco, for some time to learn English. Aside from Japan, he has lived in Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Singapore. He loves baking bread, pies and fruit cakes. He is an avid Blues lover. Some of his favourite artists are B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He enjoys a good movie with a glass of wine, a Belgian Trappist, and some Roquefort blue cheese. Since September 2012, he has been an honorary member of the “Kyoto Guide Club”. He has been living in Japan for almost 30 years, 5 years in Tokyo, then 25 years in Kyoto, which was the ancient capital of Japan.
