ABOUT CHARLES BROOKS:

Charles Brooks is an exceptional photographic talent. His portraits are coveted by the greatest artists to grace the stage, and by those who have the aspiration to get there.

Charles is a formidable musician himself. For the last 20 years he’s been New Zealand’s most successful orchestral cellist. Charles held principal positions in Australia, China, Chile and Brazil, with concerts worldwide.

While his music career took him around the globe at an early age, photography was always there. Charles refined his photographic craft in Asia and South America until National Geographic took notice in 2011.

Commissions immediately followed. His landscapes were used by fierce Chilean political campaigns, printed thousands of times. 500px, one of the world’s foremost photographic agencies, use his photos of Sao Paulo to promote their own brand. His low-light photos of southern Chile, glow worms in New Zealand, and the night sky, all make the front pages of major social networks. These garner millions of views every year.

Charles is particularly proud of his portraits of classical musicians. They’re used continuously by the most important theaters and opera houses worldwide.

Charles Combines deep insight into the drama of music with expert photographic skill. This sets him aside from any other photographer. He is unique in this regard. His portraits of world famous musicians show an excitement and flair that is missing from the classical music industry.

Charles’s technical skill attracts manufacturers at the cutting edge of Camera design. In 2018 Panasonic Lumix chose Charles to be among the first in the world to test their new flagship camera. SYRP, pioneers in motion-control, work with Charles to test and demo their latest products. These are at the forefront of the video industry.

Teaching is something Charles loves to do and is particularly good at. He uses the same pedagogy techniques in his photographic workshops that have seen his cello students win multiple awards.

The two have always gone side by side. At 15 years old Charles, already a respected cellist, picked up his first camera. He was teaching his own class at Auckland Grammar School within weeks. Tutorials and articles he’s written have been translated into dozens of languages.

Charles enjoys passing on his knowledge and years of experience, and if it’s in an exotic location under a star-strewn sky all the better.
