ABOUT SPACE INVADERS:

The Invader is an activist about whom we know almost nothing. He is Parisian and, apparently, about fifty years old. He also has a very precise objective: to invade by means of signs, or rather, by means of “the” sign, in the singular. What sign? The sign embodied by his visual creations, which systematically refer to this smallest common denominator: a logo representing the figure of a “space invader,” a stylised figure of our contemporary times, aptly signalled by a pixellated, digital-style graphic mark.

There is one word that sums up the visual strategy of the space invader: Tagging. We are talking about tags in their most elementary form, signing public space with a personal flourish, as individual as possible, in such a way that it leaves no room for confusion on the part of the viewer as to their identity, no doubt as to the identity of the author.

As a street artist, Invader prefers masonry-work to the usual Montana spray paint. His materials are squares of coloured ceramic, cement and walls of the city where he put up his sign. At an impressive rhythm that commands respect. Close to compulsive expression. To date, this masked artist has placarded over a thousand of his ceramic pieces on the walls of Paris. Given that he began his undertaking in the 90’s, we are looking at about a hundred tags a years, or nearly one every three days. These labours start to sound modestly Herculean if we bear in mind that, apart from preparing his “raids,” the artist also photographs and meticulously archives each piece added to his scattered urban jigsaw. Then there’s the fact that Invader doesn’t just cement in Paris. He also operates in Rome, Los Angeles, London, Bangkok and some 180 other cities from about 30 countries around the world.
