Ei Wada rebuilds old machines into electronic musical instruments, and creates a music performed by new and unique methods. In 2009, he started the group Open Reel Ensemble, which manipulates and plays reel-to-reel tape recorders. The group is involved in a wide range of activities including concert performances, publications, installations and providing music for movies and catwalk shows (among them music for Issey Miyake’s Paris Collection for 11 consecutive times). He has performed in various locations around the world. His latest project is called Electronicos Fantasticos for which he creates electromagnetic musical instruments and social festivals using used electrical appliances with the participants. His awards & achievements include; The 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Art Division Excellence Award (2010), Best Debutant of The Year 2011 (2011), 17th Japan Media Arts Festival Art Division Recommended Award (2013), World Omosiroi Award 3rd (2016), Wired Audi Innovation Award (2016), Ars Electronica Prix (2018), Starts’ Prize Honorary Mention (2018), 68th The New Face Award from Ministry of Education (2018), Nissan Art Award Finalist (2019).
