Simon Stalenhag (born in 1984) is the internationally acclaimed author and artist behind Tales from the Loop and Things from the Flood. His highly imaginative images and stories depicting illusive sci-fi phenomena in mundane, hyper-realistic Scandinavian and American landscapes have made Stalenhag one of the most sought-after visual storytellers in the world. Tales from the Loop was ranked one of the 10 Best Dystopias by The Guardian, along with such works as Franz Kafka’s The Trial and Andrew Niccol’s Gattaca.

His books are; Tales from the Loop (2014), Things from the Flood (2016), The Electric State (2017), The Labyrinth (2020), Europa Mekano (in development as fo August 2021).

Tales From the Loop (2014) explores the town and people who live above “The Loop,” a machine built to unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe, making things possible that were previously relegated only to science fiction. In this fantastical mysterious town poignant human tales are told that bare universal emotional experiences while drawing on the intrigue of genre storytelling.

Things from the Flood (2016), is the continuation of the stories of Tales from the Loop, memories of a Nordic childhood infused with strange machines and creatures from other dimensions. The focus has moved from the 80s to the 90s, a decade of great change when the outside world finally came to Scandinavia. These are tales of the trials of youth, of schoolyard hazings, of first kisses, of finding yourself – and the robots.

The Electric State (2017), Set in an alternative future, the book tells the story of a teenage girl (Millie Bobby Brown) who realizes that a strange but sweet robot who comes to her has actually been sent by her missing brother. She and the robot set out to find the brother in an imaginative world of humans mixing with all manner of robots, uncovering a grand conspiracy in the process.

The Labyrinth (2020), passes in a world covered in ruins and ash. An alien phenomenon has ravaged Earth’s atmosphere and forced its few survivors underground. But there are still secrets left to be uncovered. Matt, Sigrid and Charlie leave the safety of their enclave to go on an expedition into the wastelands of the surface world. During their journey, they will be forced to confront their hidden pasts from the time before civilization fell.

Simon Stalenhag was shortlisted in several awards such as Arthur C. Clarke Award (the UK’s premier prize for science fiction literature) & Locus Awards (an annual set of literary awards bestowed by the U.S. science fiction magazine Locus); and has won the prestigious The Kurd Lasswitz Award (Best Non-German SF Work in Germany) with his “Tales from the Loop” in 2021.
