ABOUT SUSANNA BAUER:

Born in EichstAtt, Germany in 1969, Susanna Bauer’s leaf works pay homage to nature as well as holding up a mirror to the viewer.

She works with natural leaves and crochet, creating an intimate dialog with nature.

Mainly constructed with dry leaves and cotton yarn the pieces hold a fine balance of fragility and strength reflecting individual stories and connections.

Susanna Bauer is mainly using what is small and fragile to express what is universal and enduring in our co-existence with each other and the natural world.

She works with the everyday, inconspicuous details of our natural surroundings, found fallen leaves get surrounded with a skilfully created crocheted halo of cotton yarn, others are coaxed into finely constructed 3D shapes while entire branches and leaves find a new life and expression. The work pays homage to nature as well as holding up a mirror to the viewer endeavouring to slow down and open eyes to the small detail and the preciousness of the world that surrounds us.

There is a fine balance in her work between fragility and strength; literally, when it comes to pulling a fine thread through a brittle leaf or thin dry piece of wood, but it can also be transferred to a wider context – the tenderness and tension in human connections, the transient yet enduring beauty of nature that can be found in the smallest detail, vulnerability and resilience reflecting nature as a whole or the stories of individual beings.

Found leaves are repaired, embellished and combined using handmade lace crochet – a laborious traditional technique relying on tension, set in direct relationship to the fragile natural material. The resulting forms are a meditation on the beauty and intricacy found in the natural world and a reflection of complex and tender relationships both within ourselves and our environment.

Her art is considered and deliberate, suggesting a concentration akin to meditation. Although small in scale, each transformed leaf becomes an engaging miniature sculpture. It is hard to look at these pieces and not be mesmerized. The idea that something so small, fragile and insignificant as a leaf becomes the foundation of a sculpture challenges expectations and holds the viewer’s attention.

The leaf works are powerful examples of the interface between artist and nature. Many artists are inspired by nature and attempt to imitate what they see in the natural world. Bauer, on the other hand, includes natural elements into her work as if she is actually collaborating with nature. In these pieces, the leaf is not simply a surface to work on or a piece of raw material to be used at will. For Bauer, the leaf is an element deserving respect and consideration. What she adds to it, or subtracts from it, is done with a sense of reverence. Her efforts enhance the natural beauty that was her starting point.
